In Newari weddings, guests bring as gifts beautiful brass plates, bowls, water containers, etc. A scribe keeps a record of what has been given and an engraver puts the guest's name on their gift so they will be remembered. When the bride arrives at the bridegroom's house she sits surrounded by her equally lavishly dressed best friends and female relatives and a circular mirror is set in front of her - guests come forward one at a time and place red envelopes containing money in a tray and are allowed to view her face in the mirror as she is too dazzlingly beautiful to be looked at directly! everyone is lavishly feasted and there is a traditional band playing- under a Shamiyana beautiful tent set up in the courtyard, there is a Dj playing all the latest hits, alcohol flows, and everyone dances including the fathers and mothers of the bride and groom - the weddings are really wonderful and throughout the wedding season you will see elegantly dressed families walking to a wedding party.

I watched many videos of wedding rituals in the many ethnic groups in Nepal. Part of the ceremony in all groups is for the bride and groom to walk 7 times around a sacred tree in the village. The most astonishing thing for me, and evidence of ancient patriarchy or matriarchy, was that with Brahmanns and kshatriya the groom lead the bride and among the ethnic Tharus, the bride led the groom with the groom tied to the trailing edge of the bride's sari! In most cases it was the lack of smiles on the face of everyone in the photos that had me a bit worried. Nepali weddings are almost always great fun with lots of joking and eating and dancing and having a wonderful time. Of course, as I have noted, some can be a disaster.

Sometimes there were some disagreements on arrangements or dowry. I heard from one of my friends from Nepal that once there was such a fight between his co-worker and the bride's family over dowry that he was sent by his co-worker to be the only person to accompany his younger brother to the bride's house.

In Bangladesh the entire ceremony is complete in one day! But in Nepal it lasts at least three days with all the guests staying overnight and the groom's best friends having an all-night party of drinking and gambling in the room or hallway right outside the room where the bride and groom spend the first night together - singing - pounding on the door-shouting advice! It is really hilarious!
