Three Tunes Tuesday: Gian Marco x 3 [ES-EN]

Hola, hivers. Después de dos semanas ausente, regreso al #TTT para compartir parte de esa música cuya energía nos cautiva de manera especial. Hoy les propongo tres versiones de una misma canción, incluyendo en la lista a su compositor, el genial cantautor peruano Gian Marco. Algo interesante que se refleja en un exponente como él, es lo eclipsado que muchas veces termina siendo precisamente el compositor de una obra musical en favor de quien la interpreta. Cuando uno revisa parte del catálogo de autor de Gian Marco, se percata de cómo su impronta está en cantantes como Marc Anthony, Alejandro Fernández, o Gloria Estefan, por citar algunos. Pero exceptuando a los melómanos más avezados, es difícil ver que se le asocie a sus grandes éxitos.

Fue precisamente la cubana Estefan quien me sirvió de puente para llegar hasta esa maravilla de tema que es "Hoy", un himno personal a Perú que funciona para toda persona que está fuera de su tierra natal y la siente en lo más hondo de su ser. Cuando lo escuchaba nuevamente preparando esta publicación, la letra me llevaba al pueblo donde nací, pobre y abandonado a su suerte —soy responsable también de ello con mi ausencia— pero lleno de vivencias inolvidables: "Tengo marcado en el pecho todos los días que el tiempo no me dejó estar aquí // Tengo una fe que madura, que va conmigo y me cura desde que te conocí".

Hello, hivers. After two weeks away, I return to #TTT to share some of that music whose energy especially captivates us. Today I propose three versions of the same song, including its composer, the great Peruvian singer-songwriter Gian Marco. Something interesting that is reflected in an exponent like him, is how eclipsed often ends up being precisely the composer of a musical work in favor of the one who interprets it. When one reviews part of Gian Marco's catalog, one notices his imprint on singers such as Marc Anthony, Alejandro Fernandez, and Gloria Estefan, to name a few. But except for the most seasoned music lovers, it is difficult to see him associated with their greatest hits.

The Cuban Estefan served me as a bridge to get to that wonderful song "Hoy" [Today], a personal hymn to Peru that works for anyone outside their homeland and feels it in the depths of their being. When I listened to it again preparing this publication, the lyrics took me to the town where I was born, poor and abandoned to its fate —I am also responsible for it with my absence— but full of unforgettable experiences: "I have marked in my chest all the days that time did not let me be here // I have a faith that matures, that goes with me and heals me since I met you".

Esta de Estefan fue la primera versión del tema que escuché. Creo que la conocida cantante cubana defendió muy bien el tema, por lo menos en el estudio, y miren que yo no soy su mejor seguidor, en tanto me parece que sus resultados son más un producto del marketing efectivo que del talento. En cuanto llegué a la universidad busqué la canción y llegué al fondo de su historia y a su autor, y desde entonces he escuchado muchísimos covers. Hoy les traigo los tres que considero más relevantes.

This one by Estefan was the first version of the song I heard. I think the successful Cuban singer defended the song very well, at least in the studio, and I am not her best follower, as it seems to me that her results are more a product of effective marketing than of talent. As soon as I got to college I looked up the song and got to the bottom of its story and its author, and since then I have listened to many, many covers. Today I bring you the three that I consider most relevant.

Respeto mucho a este peruano, porque ha sabido hacer grande a su país junto al crecimiento de su impacto en la industria musical. Es universal, pero siempre desde Perú, abrazando lo folclórico. Además, hace más de 17 años es Embajador de Buena Voluntad de UNICEF allí, y me parece que es sincero en su involucramiento con estas causas. Las tres aproximaciones a "Hoy" que comparto, incluyendo la suya, son acústicas, en vivo pero reposadas, y aún así es visible lo identificado que está Gian Marco con esta creación.

Tengo que confesar que, siendo conservador, he estado una hora sin parar —literalmente— escuchando lo que sigue en modo repeat (tengo la mala costumbre de "quemar" las canciones que me gustan), por el mayestático trabajo de las voces que acompañan aquí al autor de canciones como "No se me hace fácil" o "Hasta que vuelvas conmigo", y el virtuosismo con las guitarras. Hay pasajes melódicos, sobre todo hacia el final de la interpretación, que pagan la visualización. Aquí va.

Hoy, from and by Gian Marco

I respect this Peruvian very much because he has managed to make his country great along with the growth of his impact in the music industry. He is universal, but always from Peru, embracing the folkloric. In addition, he has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in his country for more than 17 years, and it seems to me that he is sincere in his involvement with these causes. The three approaches to "Hoy" that I am sharing, including his own, are acoustic, live but calm, and even so, it is visible how identified Gian Marco is with this creation.

I have to confess that, being conservative, I have spent an hour without stopping —literally— listening to what follows in repeat mode (I have the bad habit of "burning" the songs I like), because of the majestic work of the voices that accompany here the author of songs like "No se me hace fácil" or "Hasta que vuelvas conmigo", and the virtuosity with the guitars. But I repeat the patriotic feeling is noticeable, although perhaps in some of the live performances I have seen him, it overflows even more. There are melodic passages, especially towards the end of the performance, that "pay" for the visualization. Here it goes.

"Hoy" (India Martínez)

Esta actuación que viene a continuación también me pareció muy sólida, porque sobre una base rítmica que no transgrede la que acabamos de escuchar, la talentosa India Martínez —a quien llegué gracias a @lilyancid— pone elementos de su cosecha como productora de buen flamenco para llevarla a otra dimensión. Quizás por sus esencias musicales ella lo tenía más fácil, pero viéndola, recordé la anécdota del pianista cubano Omar Sosa cuando le propusieron hacer un disco homenaje a Miles Davis. En principio se negó, yo creo que más por el hecho de que no hace covers en general que por no hacer standards de jazz. Solo una frase que escuchó en una entrevista con Davis lo hizo comprender lo que debía hacer: "Sé tú mismo" (el disco se hizo y fue un éxito). Esto también hace Martínez aquí, separándose de la ineficaz tendencia de calcar el original. Disfrútenla.

This performance that follows also seemed very solid to me, because on a rhythmic base that does not transgress the one we have just heard, the talented India Martínez —whom I reached thanks to @lilyancid— puts elements of her harvest as a producer of good flamenco to take it to another dimension. Perhaps because of her musical essence, she had it easier, but watching her, I remembered the anecdote of the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa when he was asked to make a tribute album to Miles Davis. At first, he refused, I think more for the fact that he doesn't do covers in general than for not doing jazz standards. Only a phrase he heard in an interview with Davis made him understand what he had to do: "Be yourself" (the record was made and was a success). This Martinez also does here, separating himself from the ineffective tendency to copy the original. Enjoy.

"Hoy" (Nahuel Pennisi)

La tercera versión es otra joya, donde podemos ver al argentino Nahuel Pennisi, como siempre, descargando bien con su contagiosa voz y su técnica exquisita para tocar la guitarra (aunque tengo que reconocer que hay un acorde que no salió limpio, pero eso puede pasar cuando se está haciendo música de verdad, sin trampas). Su dicapacidad visual nunca fue óbice para que se convirtiera en un artista querido fuera y dentro de Argentina, asimilando influencias de aquí y de allá, como las del cantautor cubano Silvio Rodríguez con su canción "El Necio". Acá les dejo con su versión acústica de "Hoy", en otro performance para enmarcar.

The third version is another gem, where we can see the Argentine Nahuel Pennisi, as always, unloading well with his contagious voice and his exquisite guitar playing technique (although I have to admit that there is a chord that did not come out clean, that can happen when you are making real music, without cheating). His visual disability was never an obstacle for him to become a successful and beloved artist in and out of Argentina, assimilating influences from here and there, such as those of Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez with his song "El Necio". Here I leave you with his acoustic version of "Hoy", in another performance to be framed.
