Presentation of the book Woman time, by the author Laidi Fernández de Juan

The title that I present to you this morning is an atypical, original book. To be honest, I have not been able to define it within a specific genre; they are not stories, nor stories, it is not poetic prose, it is not an essay, nor testimonies, they are... something like a kind of vignettes, texts that masterfully capture the essence, the feeling of the author regarding everyday topics in the life of Cuban women, who can well be extrapolated to the universal woman, given that topics such as: the little free time of the working woman, mother of a family, sister, wife, daughter; the way to understand, face and overcome the “empty nest” phenomenon, that moment when children leave, when they have to make their own lives; violence of all kinds; social stereotypes; the canons of beauty; the dissimilar positions on “romantic love”; the underestimation of the female sex; the overload of responsibilities under the saying: "are there women? Everything is going to turn out well," which could sometimes seem like a compliment, but has several readings; among many other lines of thought linked to the role that girls assume in society, they are issues of interest that overcome geographical or circumstantial barriers.

The literature written by women in today's Cuba has that aroma of cleanliness, of freshness that suddenly embraces the soul and dawns. It dawns between verses and firm prose, like a heel scratching the pavement Luisa Campuzano predicted this well in The girls of Havana have no fear of God, when in her study on Cuban women writers from the 18th century to the present day, she said: the female authors I deal with share, no matter how pious whatever they are or have been, the audacity to challenge governments, transgress prejudices, subvert canons... And yes, that, among many other themes, still governs today, twenty years later, the female writers of this Island. It would be absurd to try to pigeonhole them, there is nothing between heaven and earth that is strange to the warriors of this Troy that today is transfigured, once again surrounded by complex breezes.

Laidi Fernández de Juan, author of the book Woman time

It is then worth introducing Laidi Fernández de Juan, Havana, 1961, author of this volume, where she writes what happens and can be forgotten, what happens once, what moves to overcome time, what remains, what that leaves, which in the end changes and transmutes, although it has left its mark in memory. She collects those fragments, those details that we let pass by and define us, and then she gives them life, shine, value; she makes them resonate in the Cuban norms of the language almost always with an ember of malice, rapture and kindness, with that grace that is reflected in his style, with that way of writing between ironic, biting and smiling, and of course with a purpose: “the vocation to give faith”, to capture time, to exhaust the entire plot, to delimit the transience of things, to defeat them in the end with the only possible weapons, that is, with words; as the teacher Francisco López Sacha expressed in the back cover note.

Venturing into the scant 138 pages of this book, published under Ediciones Matanzas, 2019, is an inward reading, a kind of journey through the mirror, where it will not cost us so much to change our skin to see ourselves in those roles. The texts are organized in some way under thematic sections where we will find the following sequence: it opens with “Us”, then “Schools”, “Cuba today”, “Questions” and finally the largest section, “Miscellaneous”, closing nothing more and with no less than the following title: “Per, prejudices and stereotypes.” The author concludes by leaving her point of view regarding the topic she addresses, which, to the delight of readers who, like me, aspire to increasingly holistic and diverse understandings and social tolerances, is accurate and in line with our needs current moments and I am sure that it will continue to be consistent with future times as well, since there is still much to demystify, to decode regarding the role of women in society. It is time for women, there is no doubt, rising from the ashes of all the witches who burned under the fire of fear and ignorance is and should continue to be a premise for triumph.

Simply put, where there are women, there are no ghosts, but a mountain of more or less pleasant duties. Mountain that we enter tooth and nail, without knowing what, who or how awaits us; but you have to enter it with all possible desire. “Everything is going to be fine”, seems to be the motto of the contemporary woman, the one who shakes off her longings, takes a deep breath and moves forward.
