Good day to the great members of this community. I have been reading some contents that put smile on my face since about a month ago that I joined hive. I must commend the brain behind this.
I want share a personal experience that shaped my life up to this moment. It convinced me to always be sincere with whatever I do.
At 15, I lost my maternal grandmother and I was asked by my father to go and stay with my grandfather whose wife just died. I was in year 3 in secondary school then.
My grandfather stayed in a small farm settlement. There was a town 5 kilometers away. I was enrolled in a school in the town to continue my education.
We were five in number, whose guardians were staying in the farm settlement, that were enrolled in the same school. Four of us rented a room and stay in the town.
Every Friday evening, we go to meet our parents for the weekend while we return back on Sunday evening in order to resume school on Monday.
My grandfather was into growing of tuber crops, grains and vegetables. He was also a hunter that set local traps to catch games. I joined him to participate in all these on weekends.
A year into my stay with him, I learned how to set traps to catch bush animals. My grandfather soon after, left all the traps into my care - he was aging - and they were only set when I am around.
Here came a particular weekend that, as usual, I set the traps at strategic points on Friday evening when I got home with my bicycle.
All the four of us had our individual bicycle. Before I left for farm that weekend, I had set my eyes on a shoe I wanted to buy but was worrying about where to get the money.
On Saturday morning, I checked the traps and fortunately, one caught a grasscutter. Instead of bringing it my grandfather as I always did, I tied it quickly in a sack on my bicycle and I rode straight to town to sell it.
I got to town and headed straight to a woman into restaurant business whom I sold it for. I quickly returned back to the farm, harvested some yams and returned home to my grandfather.
"Where have you been since morning? I thought you said you would come back immediately after checking the traps" asked my grandfather.
In my response, I lied to him that I decided to do some work before coming home. I put food on fire for lunch and I was so happy that my operation was successful.
Three days later was the market day in town and my grandfather hardly missed going to the market. It had been his culture before his wife died. He goes to the market to shop for his needs and also check on his friends in town.
He was walking to the market when the restaurant woman saw him and jokingly engaged him in some conversations.
The woman said;
"Your son is so good at selling products. He sells like a woman. I pleaded with him to sell the grasscutter to me at a reduced price but he refused."
"I don't know what you are talking about." he responded.
At this point, the woman took her time to explain how I came to sell bush meat for her.
My grandfather left the woman, after telling her that he never knew or approved of the transaction, and came straight to look for me. He said to me;
"You are so good at market bargaining. What a talent!"
Hearing this, I knew wind has blown and the cock's anus is visible.
He scolded me before returning to the farm.
In the evening, I went straight to challenge the woman for having a basket mouth that couldn't keep secrets. She however apologize and told me that we never agreed that grandpa was not in the picture of the business.
That was the experience that changed me for better. Sincerity is good.
