This is my entry for the question below on the weekend-engagement concept.
Write about an event or time in your life in which you felt loved or you felt loss, or both. What prompted it, how did it affect you and how did you deal with it?
I left the town of Jos disappointed. I had gone for registration for an admission offered me in the University.
Unfortunately, I was made to understand that the course I was offered was a part-time course. I didn't do the registration due the costly nature of that programme and the duration which is more than the regular programmes. This wasn't all, another disappointment was my encounter with my cousin that I stayed with while in Jos for few days. He attempted swindling me of some cash despite knowing that I had decided not to do registration for the programme admitted for.
He was a student of the programme. He was the one that told me about the programme before applying and had expected me to pay some money after the admission. When I decided not to do the registration,I begged him to take me to the administration staff of the university that helped him facilitate the admission of which $200 was to be given so that I could beg her with one third of the money and tell her that I wasn't doing again. He refused taking me to her and I later realised that no one like that existed. His inconsiderate nature despite being a brother that knew me and my family was very painful.
I left Jos to Abuja with anger the following day. On getting to the motor park in Abuja, I needed to board another cab to my sister's place where I used to stay when in Abuja. I went to the section of the park loading passengers going to the route but couldn't find any car in the stand loading. I had to go and enter a transit vehicle along the express. I knew how dangerous it was to board such vehicles as a result of reported series of theft from passengers by operators of some unregistered vehicles looking for their preys along the express but I had no option than to go that way at that particular time. I desperately wanted to get home and refresh to get off the provocation of my cousin from my mind.
I waited for few minutes before waving at a Volkswagen car going to my route.
The vehicle stopped and I boarded. I met five passengers in the car and I completed it six. I dropped my bag at the boot. On our way, the driver stopped and advise all the passengers to go and drop our phones, money and any other valuable in our bag in the boot. Any instruction he gave, the other five people oblige immediately. I wasn't convinced of the reason behind such instruction, so I only acted as if I dropped my belongings but I didn't. Unknown to me someone at the back seat was able to search my bag while we were in continuation of our journey and realized that I didn't drop my valuables in the bag as instructed. After devising many tactics to rob me and as I wasn't giving in, the driver parked suddenly and asked every passenger to alight. I alighted together with others and the driver brought out a pistol.
It was at this stage that my remaining doubts were cleared. I have entered "one chance", the common Nigerian name for thieves using cars to steal from passengers. Like the name implied, the car is always filled up by the criminal gangs with only one chance left to accommodate the potential victim.
I was robbed right there and like I explained earlier, I was the only odd person and the victim. They collected my phone and all the cash on me. My bag was thrown at me as they were taken off. I was sad and devastated. I felt loss. What should I do? No phone to reach anyone. I was seated on a stone with my bag when a car stopped and the driver came down to urinate. He initiated discussion with me and asked why I was at that lonely spot of the road. I explained my ordeal. He offered to help me in his car to my house but I rejected the offer because it was too early for me to trust another stranger. He later convinced me that he was just interested in helping me in the spirit of love. I trusted him once again and I boarded his car. He did not only take me home but also bought me snacks along the way.
I felt loved and for as long as I live, I won't forget that gesture.
