"We can spend a lifetime getting to know others. Yet make little to no effort in knowing ourselves so we find it difficult being alone..as our moments of solitude are in the company of a stranger."- Suhaib Rumi
Recently, I read
@jongcl's blog post where she talked about the need to spend time with yourself and that being alone does not mean you are lonely and I truly resonate with her thoughts as I read through her blog post which then inspired me to share my thoughts about self-love and the need to spend time alone.
Earlier I shared a quote which I read as soon as I woke up this morning. I always had a notion that my purpose in life is to find a partner who I resonate with and to get to know people as I explore life. I honestly have been doing that for the past 22 years, meeting new people and get to understand who they are through the conversations and moments that we share. However, I came into a realization that I have been spending all my life trying to find meaning in the hands of another person but I haven't made a deep connection with myself because I found it so hard to be alone.
I am an extrovert and I still consider myself to be one but despite being an extrovert I realized the value of spending time alone or going on a date with yourself because if you are not happy on your own then you will never be happy when you are with someone self. I believe that an empowered woman can stand on her own and has a sense of independence because that is who she is and that is who I want to be. Although I still struggle with independence, I believe that I am growing to be a woman who is capable of self-sufficiency.
Spending time alone to reconnect with oneself on a deeper level is a form of self-love and it honestly healed me. I have been through difficult times which broke my heart not just romantically but in other aspects of life as well. And because I learned how to love and respect myself I realized that I am now healing. I learned that self-love also entails self-forgiveness and that is done by letting go by not allowing yourself to be consumed by your past mistakes and instead you allow yourself to learn and grow through it.
There are still more steps to make and chances to take in this beautiful journey called life. I hope we continue to make time for ourselves by doing the things that we love. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be in the company of others because we can't go through this journey alone for we need people to walk with us. However, there are moments in life where we need to spend time with ourselves and that is how we get to know ourselves and how we love ourselves even more. Self-love isn't narcissistic for self-love also gives us the power to be empathetic since through it we get to know how to love others even more.
How do you spend time alone? Do you also enjoy doing things on your own? Would love to know your thoughts!
Sending love and light.
