Nearly 18 years after the terrorist attacks took place on September 11, 2001, there are many things people know and reflect on. However, many questions remained unanswered about what happened back then. There have been many lessons I’ve learned since that tragic day took place. 9/11 happened as a result of blowback; for example, US government intervention in the Middle East in the years before the attack. Also, it seems that we live in a society that values security over freedom. The immediate aftermath of 9/11 was a clear indication of that preference. From the Patriot Act to the TSA enforced in all major US airports, things have been far worse than expected.
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” That reminder was forgotten right after 9/11 happened, but it remains relevant today as the surveillance state keeps growing. If we want to be real, free individuals, we cannot allow bureaucrats and politicians to mislead us into giving some of our freedoms. In the end, nobody is responsible for your safety and security, but it is YOU who is responsible to provide your protection. You need the liberty to have security. When we have freedom, we can provide for our safety. More so, when we have both, we can be prosperous and successful in life.
