DER KOLLOSS VON RÜGEN
Normally I like the idea of a lost place being put to good use again. In the case of the KDF Bad, however, it would have been better to tear down these ugly concrete blocks and plant a few trees. To be honest, I find the megalomania of the German fascists to be disgusting, to say the least.
In 1936, construction of the resort began according to the designs of the architect Clemens Klotz (Klotz = Block, the name says it all!). The organisation "Strength through Joy" planned a seaside resort at Prorer Wiek between Binz and Saßnitz for 20,000 holidaymakers. With the beginning of the Second World War, construction work was stopped. The unfinished facility was taken over by the National People's Army of the GDR (NVA) after the war. A military use of the ugly concrete blocks somehow fits much better than a tourist use.
Eight identical blocks over a total length of 4.5km were planned. A large festival hall was to be built in the middle. The construction of the hall was never started. By 1949, 3 blocks had been completely or partially destroyed. The remaining 5 blocks were used by the NVA as barracks buildings and a small part as a holiday resort for deserving military personnel. After 1990, the Bundeswehr wound up the facility. Some parts were then used for civilian purposes for a short time. Among other things, there was a discotheque and some car repair shops on the site. Since 2004, the blocks have been sold and converted into hotel facilities. Among other things, there is a youth hostel in the buildings. The complex is, for whatever reason, a listed building.

I can't tell you how many times I've been to Prora. I explored the site for the first time in the 1990s. At that time, there was hardly anyone there but me. We liked to go swimming there in the summer. There is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Rügen and it was very lonely there back then. Most people preferred to lie crowded together on one of the beaches in the fashionable seaside resorts of Binz, Sellin or Göhren.
For some years now, however, the beach in Prora has been just as crowded as in the fashionable seaside resorts. More and more holiday accommodation is being built on the island. During the holiday season, the island is often bursting at the seams. There are traffic jams on the roads, the supermarkets and restaurants are overcrowded, you can hardly find a quiet spot on the island. Especially during the "pandemic", the island was hopelessly overcrowded in summer. In the meantime, many people prefer to fly to Mallorca or Turkey again for half the price.
This year, curiosity took me to Prora again. I got my first shock at the newly built car park. For 2€ per hour or 20€ (in words: twenty) per day, you can park your car there. Some of the blocks are already finished. The holiday flats are rented out at sometimes utopian prices. Other parts of the site are construction sites with the associated noise and dirt. Who wants to spend their holidays there? Apart from the construction work and a few other curious visitors, there was not much activity there either.
Wer will dort Urlaub machen?
So that the holiday idyll of the KdF holidaymakers would not be disturbed by the mob, the back of the buildings were secured with a fence.
Some parts of the complex will probably remain as ruins in the future. Renovation would probably be far too expensive. And because the entire complex is a listed building, nothing will be demolished.
The building with the small window openings housed the NVA detention cells. Prison with sea view.
A feeling of trepidation remained as I drove away again. "After such a long time, the work of the fascists was finished" were my thoughts. Of course, nowadays you don't have to be an obedient citizen to go on "holiday" there. A sufficiently high level of bankruptcy is enough. But that doesn't change the flair of the site or the history of this special place in the slightest, in my opinion. It would never occur to me to spend my holiday in such a place, even if the overnight stay would only cost 20€. I am also not sure if this concept will work in the end. The "big" holiday resorts on the island of Rügen, like the Seepark in Sellin, usually don't work. And in Prora, unlike Sellin, there is no infrastructure worth mentioning apart from the concrete blocks.
