Fees will still be there, but there'll be a new structure as per EIP 1559. Actually, it's likely this EIP will go live on Eth1.x and then move forward to 2.0. But with 2.0 Phase 2, with much greater scalability, fees will be much lower. The base fee will be burned, which will improve economics and lower inflation. Even if there's major congestion, which might happen if there's mass adoption even with 2.0, the fees will go up, but there'll be no waiting time. So, yeah, the user experience will be much improved, but fees will be there. For applications including micro-transactions, for example, there's always the option of deploying a Layer 2 solution which is bandwidth-driven. E.g. Hive can become a Layer 2 on top of Ethereum.
