Hello, everyone!
_ During a storm, the sea throws silt, algae, mussels and barnacles. Lately, walking along the seashore, I often find shells of the clam Rapana venosa._
Rapana is a predatory mollusk that carries a beautiful curled shell.
Do you remember how we used to listen to the sound of the sea in this shell when we were children?
Rapana lives in the Black Sea, but its natural habitat is the Pacific Ocean. The predatory mollusk entered the Black Sea on the bottoms of ships. This was at the beginning of the 20th century.
Experts are concerned that the mollusk may have caused damage to local ecosystems since then.
Indeed, the population of Rapana has been increasing at one time. Periods of growth alternate with declines, as is happening now. The number of this mollusc is subject to fluctuations. Mass destruction of "natural water filters" - mussels by rapana is not observed.
Rapana breeding season is from midsummer to early autumn. After spawning, the rapana crawl away from the shore in order not to be thrown ashore by furious winter storms. But it is not always possible to escape from the elements.
Sadly, these mollusks are thrown ashore.
Photos were taken in different seasons of the year.
