The Hallway of Memory
There are places inside a house that we pass through so many times that we stop noticing them. A hallway can be one of them. We walk through it to reach another room, open a door, and continue on our way without paying much attention to the floor, the walls, or the light coming in from somewhere. However, when a house is old and the afternoon light manages to reach all the way to the end, that everyday space can take on a different appearance. The shadows stretch across the wood, an open door lets in brightness, and, for a few seconds, a place designed simply for passing through changes and manages to make you stop.
It is exactly that which I like about hallways: they are not made for staying. Their purpose is to take us from one place to another. They do not have the comfort of a living room or the intimacy of a bedroom. They are transitional spaces, places that exist between one room and the next. And, in some way, they resemble certain moments in our lives.
Some stages are like that too, when we do not know exactly where we are. We have left something we knew behind, but we have not yet reached what comes next. We are not completely in the past, but we do not feel part of the future either. The position is strange because we want quick answers. We want to know what comes next, how long the waiting will last, and when we will once again feel that we are standing on familiar ground.
The hallway does not answer any of those questions. It is simply there, waiting for us to cross it.
Perhaps that is why an old house can make a hallway seem to hold memories. Not because the walls can literally remember, but because we imagine the things that might have happened there. People walking from one room to another, children running, someone carrying a tray, or a conversation that began beside a door and ended at the far end of the hallway. As the years pass, everyday spaces accumulate little stories that are not written down anywhere. What remains are the marks, the objects, the worn wood, and the feeling that someone else was there before us.
Our own inner hallways work in a similar way. We also carry marks from the places we have passed through. Some belong to pleasant memories and others to moments we would rather not repeat. Decisions that forced us to change direction, people who were left behind, and situations that ended when we were not ready to say goodbye. Sometimes we keep walking with all of that inside us, even though we no longer live in the same emotional place.
The feeling of being between two things can appear in many ways. When you start something new without knowing whether it will work, when we leave behind a habit that accompanied us for years, when a relationship changes, or when we simply discover that we no longer think the way we used to. From the outside, perhaps it does not seem as if anything is happening. We keep working, talking, and fulfilling our responsibilities, but inside we are going through a different stage.
I think that many times we confuse the lack of certainty with the lack of progress. If we have not yet reached a defined place, we think we are standing still. But a hallway shows us the opposite. Even though it is not a destination, we are moving forward every time we take a step.
The light at the end of a hallway always catches our attention. We do not know exactly what is behind the open door, but the brightness makes us look toward it. It could be another room, a patio, a window, or simply another part of the house. There is no need to turn that light into a great promise. It is enough to recognize that something exists on the other side.
Maybe that is enough for us too. We do not need to know exactly what the future will be like in order to keep walking. Some transitions need time, some decisions first need to be made, and some paths can only be understood after we have traveled a meaningful part of them.
Hallways also have something quiet about them. They are places of passage, but not necessarily of conversation. People walk through them and continue toward somewhere else. Perhaps that is why they are suitable places for thinking. We can cross them while putting an idea in order in our heads and then continue with the rest of the day.
I like to think that some corners are not meant to become our favorite places. Some simply accompany us as we move forward. A hallway is one of them. We cross it to reach another place, but for a few moments we are also living there.
And when we look back, we may discover that the stretch we wanted to cross quickly also had something to show us: the light on the floor, the shadows of an afternoon, a half-open door, or the distant sound of someone in another room. Small details that seemed insignificant while we were moving forward, but that eventually became part of our path.
Not every stage of life needs to become a destination. Some simply exist to help us move from one version of ourselves to another.
