Last weekend, we got together at my parents' house. We had a lovely day, one of those family gatherings when everyone feels comfortable and the conversation flows easily. At lunchtime, we sat around the table, talked about different things and enjoyed being together. It had been a while since we had shared a meal like that, without arguments, complaints or anything to spoil the moment.
When we finished eating, we cleared the plates and everyone went out to the porch to keep talking. Before leaving the dining room, I looked back at the table. Just a few minutes earlier, it had been the center of everything: the food, the laughter, the stories and the voices of my family. Now it was empty, waiting for the next meal.
I stood there for a moment, looking at it, and started remembering how many times I had eaten at that same table as a little girl. It was there during ordinary family lunches, but also during conversations that seemed very important to me at the time. I remembered advice from my parents, discussions about different situations, and all kinds of ideas and theories that we shared around those four turned wooden legs.
Some conversations were light and funny. Others were more serious. There were moments when someone wanted to explain something, when we disagreed or when we tried to understand a problem together. Not every discussion ended with everyone thinking the same way, but they were all part of our family life.
When I was little, I probably didn't pay much attention to the table itself. I was more interested in the food, in what the adults were saying or in getting up as soon as I finished eating. I didn't imagine that years later I would look at that same piece of furniture and remember so many moments connected to it.
The table has witnessed many stages of our lives. People have grown up, routines have changed and some conversations are now only memories. Yet the table is still there, occupying the same place in the house and bringing everyone together whenever we have the chance.
Of course, not every memory around it is happy. Families have disagreements, difficult days and conversations that are not easy to have. But those moments also belong to our history. Sharing a table does not mean that we always agree; sometimes it means that we can sit together, talk and continue being a family despite our differences.
That afternoon, while everyone was outside on the porch, the empty table reminded me of all the things that had happened around it. It had been part of so many ordinary days that I had lost count.
Perhaps that is what makes certain corners of a house so meaningful. We don't always notice them while life is happening around us. We only stop and look when a moment brings back everything they have witnessed.
And when the next meal comes, the table will fill up again. Someone will bring the food, someone else will ask for a plate, and the conversations will begin. The table will once again become part of our family gathering, just as it has been for so many years.
Is there a table in your home that holds memories of family gatherings and conversations you still remember?

Algunas conversaciones eran ligeras y divertidas.
