There are plants that appear in places where one would not expect to find life. A small weed growing through a crack in the sidewalk can go unnoticed among so many footsteps and so much concrete, but when we stop to look at it, it is difficult not to wonder how it managed to get there. Concrete is hard and seems to leave no room for anything else. Yet that little plant found a crack and began to grow. It did not have prepared soil or perfect conditions. It simply found a possibility and took it.

And although there are circumstances that can genuinely make things more difficult, we do not always need to wait for everything to be perfect. Sometimes it is enough to find that small space that allows us to begin.

What is interesting is that the plant does not stop being what it is in order to adapt to the place where it grew. It is green, it keeps looking for the light and it keeps growing. I think we can also learn to adapt without losing what identifies us. Changing some things, learning new ways of doing them or accepting that life took another path does not mean ceasing to be ourselves.

I also think about how not everything that grows has to do so in the way we imagined. There are people who take different paths, projects that are born much later than expected and stages of life that are nothing like the plans we had. But that does not mean they have lost their value.

That is why optimism does not consist of thinking that everything will be easy, but in continuing to look for possibilities even when the environment is not the best. Even if a possibility is small: an idea, a conversation, a new opportunity or the desire to try again.

The next time I see a plant growing among the concrete, I will probably stop for a moment to look at it. It may seem insignificant, but it will be there, reminding me that life also knows how to find paths where we only see obstacles.
