Rene Magritte's The Banquet.

alluring, enchanting. it is like staring at the sun, but safe on the eyes. the color of the "sun" is a perfect distillation of sunset. the parkland shown is contained, peaceful, a gentle green, but the sun bleeds through, suffuses the entire space with light. there is warmth and also dread.
i saw this piece in person at the Art Institute of Chicago. breathtaking. i could look at it for hours. my eyes are comforted and challenged in turn. i find it endlessly fascinating.
according to the site above, there are a few different variations on the piece. two are shown there, and it is a very slight change in the hue of the colors, as if a few minutes have passed and night is a step closer.
the sun is dying, and you will never see it again. but, miraculously, it is here again tomorrow.
