the site uses your excess upload bandwidth to share the streams you watch. if a stream has the TFUEL icon next to it, you can earn, but you only earn when another peer receives data that you've uploaded.

if it is being used as a means of exchange and people are willing to accept it for payment and using it consistently, the exchange rate to USD matters less than how much a loaf of bread costs when valued
