This butterfly seen in the picture goes by the name - Common Tiger. It's scientific name is Danaus genutia. It is widely distributed in India and other south east Asian countries. It can be seen flying at low alititude in open places like meadows and garden. The butterfly got its name from its resemblance with the tiger stripes. It is those stripes in the wings that makes this butterfly so unique and beautiful. This colourful stripes provide them the defense mechanism against their predators indicating that it maybe toxic to them. Even if the predators eat these butterflies, they are released soon as they emit foul odor from the toxic it stores in its body after feeding on milkweed plants. It was very fascinating to see this one flying in the grounds. The combination of green colour of grass and its coloured wings make me feel like earth is indeed more bewitching with these beautiful creatures.
