This was a small little exercise I was going through with a student to demonstrate how to build the image up in a controlled manner.
Using a proportional grid, the major features of the subject are laid out in relation to each other's position and size. I have found this type of grid infinitely better at producing good results than using a regular evenly spaced square grid.
The major shadows are grouped together and shaded as an even value.
The shadows are further divided into shapes of darker values and shaded.
The process is continued, but the lighter values are not added yet.
Now we have what looks to be an over exposed image, because have the shadows are in place, but the lighter values are missing. It's now time to put those in.
With the background shaded we have the final image.
