Couldn't we add that fact that diversification is also a kind of protection against epidemic, as an unlucky disease (or even invading insects) may kill a culture completely? I have also heard that mixing cultures in the same area allows them to self-help each other. This is in particular what we do in our small local garden (a few squared meters, so nothing really big). We pay a particular attention to mix species that go well with each other and put a lot of space between species that do not go well with each other.
