Have you ever wondered why some people are still together even after all the things they have done to hurt each other? I mean, when you look at some families, couples, or even friends, you sometimes wonder how they are still able to sit together, laugh together, eat together, and go about their lives after certain things have happened between them.

The truth is, living together does not mean that people have never hurt each other. It does not mean that they have never said things they regret or done things that caused pain and it certainly does not mean that they have forgotten everything that happened.

Sometimes, they remember it very well. They remember the words that made them cry, the disappointments they never expected, and the moments when someone they trusted let them down. But despite all of that, they choose to move forward. Why? Because they understand that forgiveness is part of living with other people.Nobody is perfect. Not even the people we love the most.

Sometimes, we hurt others without realising how deeply our words or actions have affected them. At other times, we know we are wrong, but pride makes it difficult for us to admit it and apologise. This is where many relationships begin to suffer. It is not always because the problem is too big to solve, but because nobody wants to be the first to say, "I am sorry."

Think about it, if we decided to stop talking to everyone who ever offended us, how many people would still be in our lives today? How many friendships would survive? How many families would still gather together? How many marriages would have lasted?

I believe the answer would be very few, living with people requires patience. It requires understanding that we will not always agree on everything and that there will be days when our emotions get the better of us. Sometimes, we need to talk things out, sometimes, we need to apologise, even when it is uncomfortable and sometimes, we simply need to give each other time to heal.

But there is something important we should understand about forgiveness. Forgiving someone does not mean pretending that nothing happened, it does not mean that the pain was not real or that the person who hurt you was right. You can forgive someone and still remember what happened. You can forgive and still need time before you trust that person again.

After all, trust is not rebuilt by words alone, it is rebuilt through actions and consistency. I have come to realise that forgiveness is not always easy. In fact, sometimes, it is the hardest thing to do, especially when the person who hurt you is someone you never expected it from.It is easier to say, "I have forgiven you," than to actually let go of the anger and disappointment inside you.

But holding on to every hurt can also make it difficult to enjoy the good things that remain in a relationship. That been said, forgiveness does not mean allowing someone to keep hurting you. There are situations where you need to create boundaries or walk away to protect your peace. You can forgive someone without giving them the same place in your life they once had.

We should all know that the important thing is learning not to allow every offence to become the end of a relationship that can still be repaired. We are all going to make mistakes.

Today, someone may offend you, and tomorrow, you may be the one asking for forgiveness, that is why humility matters. The same understanding we hope to receive from others is the understanding we should be willing to give. When you look at people who have lived together for many years, you may see the happiness, the laughter, and the beautiful memories they have created.

What you may not see are the difficult conversations, the apologies, the tears, and the many times they had to choose peace over pride. That is part of what keeps people together.

People live together not because they have never hurt each other, and not because they have forgotten the hurt, but because they have learned that love sometimes requires forgiveness and honestly, I think that is something we all need to remember.
