I know that this post talks about much more, but I'm honing in on just the one idea: that we shouldn't care what others think of us part. We shouldn't always care what others think in every situation but the idea that we should never care is a farce. It literally goes against our nature as humans. We are a social species and we are meant to care what others think of us. That is why we have evolved to experience emotions. Emotions are short lived complex feelings and thoughts that serve a purpose, and most of the emotions that we experiences are socially drivin. Embarrassment, guilt, shame, pride, envy, sympathy, empathy and so many more, are all emotions that stem from interacting with others. They are meant to maintain social norms and relationships. Guilt as an example is essentially a signal for an individual to reflect on their actions or behaviors in order to make a change that aligns with a social norm. Embarassment is very similar. So emotions are an evolutionary tool that demonstrates that we should care what others think.
