The invaders are a tall reed called Phragmites. Invasive plant species come from “somewhere else”. Phragmites australis creeped into the United States from the east coast. It grows extremely tall and dense. It crowds out native plants and destroys fauna habitat. There is a native Phragmites that grows not so tall or dense. The native species plays well with others. An ecosystem evolved around the native variety allowing flora and fauna to live together in mutually beneficial relationship. Not so with Phragmites australis.
