최근 Bittrex에 올라와 거래되고 있는 BAT(Basic Attention Token)의 주력 상품(?) 브레이브 브라우저를 사용해보고 후기를 올리게 되었습니다.

장점

첫째, 다른 분들도 써주셨지만 많은 웹사이트에서 광고차단이 잘 된다는 점입니다.
둘째, pdf viewer, torrent viewer, lastpass, 1passsword 등 확장 프로그램들이 생각보다 구비되어 있습니다.

단점

첫째, A 스트리밍 업체나, 특정 커뮤니티 사이트처럼 게시판 첫 글이 광고인 경우는 차단이 되지 않는다는 것입니다.

둘째, 아직 버그가 있고 최적화가 덜 되었다는 느낌을 받습니다.

셋째, 요즘 대세에 맞추어 Flash 사용이 꺼진 채로 나오는데, 플래시를 많이 사용하는 한국 인터넷 환경에서는 사용자들이 불편함을 느낄 수 있습니다.
특히 플래시를 설치하고 기능을 켜는 과정은, 컴퓨터에 친숙하지 않은 사용자들이 하기 어렵습니다.
플래시가 있는 사이트에 들어가면 활성화시키겠냐고 물어보고, 바로 활성화 시켜줄 수 있어야한다고 생각합니다.

넷째, 모바일 UI는 괜찮았지만, PC UI는 부드럽지 못하다는 느낌을 받았습니다.

전망

광고

오래전 PC 작업표시줄 위에 뷰바 광고를 띄우고, 광고를 클릭하거나 장시간 시청하면 돈을 주던 사업 모델이 생각났습니다. 그 회사는 오래전에 망해서 없어졌습니다.
하지만 최근 모바일 잠금 화면 광고 앱이 잘 운영되는 것을 보면, 시대가 다르므로 성공할 수 있지 않을까? 라는 생각이 들었습니다.
다만 광고차단 기능의 경우, 현재 크롬 확장기능으로도 잘 사용하고 있는 유저들이 많습니다.
이들을 끌어오려면 확장기능들이 굉장히 강력하고 편리해져야 한다고 생각합니다.

안전한 브라우저

사실 안전한 브라우저에 대한 수요는 이미 토르 브라우저에서 충족시키고 있습니다.
반대로 토르 브라우저 이외의 브라우저들은 안전함에 있어서, 마케팅적으로 큰 차별점을 보이지 못하고 있습니다.
마케팅을 잘한다면 충분히 가능성 있어 보입니다.

경쟁자

이 사업 모델이 잘 되면 구글이 가만히 있지 않을 텐데... 걱정이 조금 되는 부분입니다.

결론

최소 '5년' 정도 사용층 및 지지층이 견고해지면 성공할 것으로 보입니다.
기술보다도, 확장 기능 및 외부 프로그램을 개발하는 개발자를 지원하는 것과 마케팅이 더 성패에 영향을 미칠 것입니다.

광고 없는 사이트들을 보니 깨끗하면서도, 운영을 그만둘까 걱정이 되었습니다.

Fourth, the mobile UI was fine, but the PC UI felt uncomfortable.

Business Outlook

Advertising

I was reminded of a business model that displayed a viewbar ad on top of the PC taskbar and paid me when I clicked on the ad or watched it for a long time.
The company died a long time ago.
However, nowadays, many mobile screen lock ad apps hit the ground running.

For the ad blocking feature, there are a lot of users who are using Chrome extension right now.
I think extensions should be very powerful and convenient to attract them.

Safe browsers

In fact, the demand for a secure browser is already met by Tor Browser.
On the other hand, browsers other than Thor browsers are not very different in terms of security.
If brave browser team is good at marketing, brave browser seem to have plenty of possibilities.

Conclusion

It is expected to be successful if the usage and support layers are solid enough for at least '5 years'.
Beyond technology, support for developers to develop extensions and external programs, and marketing will further impact success.
