Hi enforcer, its actually about recording peoples contribution while they're away, so that when they come back from holiday, they get reimbursed by other members voting them back for their support.
The system is genius, we've had people use it for many years and it helps stem the issue of your account not making money while you have to do something else, your votes help other people and when you post again you catch up with them till the numbers match again.
We've never used any VP for ourselves, we've been running the value added service since 2017 and every member of the community has always received the same service.
I'd also like to highlight that we've come to know most of the people in our community, come to know and love them, and do try to stay in touch with them and try to remind them that they can still post every now and then, the bigger operation behind school of minnows is a group of active onboarders, we dont just get users to make accounts, we help them use the networks for months and months, give them advice when they get attacked by the busybodies that are killing hive, and help them navigate the space.
You should drop into our discord, we run as a DAO and there's always room for growth!
School of minnows is only one of our projects, this one is specifically altruism and training oriented, but did you know we do other projects too?, some are about expanding the capabilities of the internet itself, one is about the evolution of the bittorrent prototocol to support https, like dynamic ipfs, another is about having domain names that you manage on the blockchain.
We also run social projects to train developers, we actually have one on right now where we help each developer get 3 VPS computers free, for life, how to get them SSL, free, for life, full development stacks, free, for life, see the pattern here? I doubt that you could find a reason to say that we're somehow swindling those people too... 🤣 it's ok though, people on hive aren't very trusting, that's because they're not used to communities like ours, they're used to all the usual hive-scams that everone else runs. Our track record is too long and too perfect to accuse of anything frankly, and our community is too big and too active to fail.
I would say our community has shown an exemplary effort over the long term, we haven't been coaxed in to sullying our morals or ethics, our team is strong and active, we produce more software and media than any other team here, which is no small claim.
If you're more interested in SOM, or would like to know what the source code looks like or convince us that there is a higher ethic that the system can persue, please feel free to drop in, we're always on entrypoint.
You have to respect peoples freedom to use their wallets as they please, even when they're not using that specific account to post at the time, many people have already been attacked so much on hive that they don't wish to post anymore right now, and all we can do for them is try to remind them every so often that they can still do that. Right now we're dealing for instance with one user that has been demoted by markymark, this user is disabled, and can only speak Afrikaans, lives in a rural area, but takes amazing photos, it took us months to get the user to have the confidence to post his content, and now this kind of activity has ruined months of trust building between us and real world users we're trying to promote hive to.
There is no quesiton that our effort is alrtuistic, you should please try and be more considerate and rather talk to teams in person before casting public judgement like that, especially when we're so open about our contact details.
@antisocialist I would say that the ganging up comment is very apt :) the idea of snowballing small users activity over a long period of time to fix hive's distribution model of everyone working really hard to post but all the VP getting siphoned back to the whales who don't work for their rewards, is at the heart of the project's intentions, and it is also the reason why there are unhappy whales who's bidbots, clique trails and heavy handed moderation of small users is being threatened, because any growth of small members creates a tipping of the scales away from their swindling efforts. 😊
