Is it possible to tame one's desires? I asked myself this question after an event occurred that almost shook the foundation of a lady's group I'm part of in my neighbourhood. It's an association of women within the community and we meet once every week to see how we can change things in our society.
From time to time, we undertake some small projects and try to help people in need. With the current events in my country, especially relating to the issue of the release of new currency notes and scarcity of cash, things have taken a different and difficult turn for our group.
We are no longer able to function as we used to —clearly because the availability of cash made our philanthropic work in the community easy. Now, no one seems to care as we are hustling, so to say, for our personal needs and that of our families rather than thinking of others. It's a sad state.
The irony is that now more needs have arisen to which our group usually catered but we are unable to at the moment. Then we have disgruntled outsiders who are linked to some of our members accusing us of being fake. Those pointing the fingers are people who could as well help those in need but they blame our group for not caring enough. We see it's a case of greed and it astounds me.
How can a person tame this desire for greed? I find that it is impossible no matter how much such a person pretends or tries to hide that part of himself. It's not possible. It may not be revealed immediately but later on, it will rear up its head like a hungry animal searching for a scrumptious meal to devour.
We are looking for means to see what little we can do to make things easy now that we are living in a cashless society only to discover that the funds that can be used have been squandered. So many shocking things revealed themselves in our group's meeting today that led to disagreements and surprises.
I return to my house with these thoughts jostling in my mind for attention while I take care of chores. The human mind and behaviours have never ceased to amaze me. I guess as we grow older we learn more about this nature of ours, yes?
