Haha yeah, I come from the Maritimes (N-B) an area that is different early European, it's pretty mush a mix of french/English/Irish & other Loyalists/Aboriginal. I don't know what it looks like now, it's been like a decade since I've been. Here in the bigger urban centers, it's definitely a "mixed salad" as you put it (I think it's cute). There is a lot of student visas's here. I moved to the west when I was really young it was a big culture shock at first, the vibe is different here but soon enough felt at home, now I wouldn't want it any other way. (Most of my generation and gen-x that is from N-B is probably out here or at least comes here to work too)
That's pretty cool, you traveled all over the world! That had to have been quite an experience and you do get exposed to many languages. I'm sure sometimes it offers a bit of instability it's a priceless experience in the end. Being part of a foreign exchange student is pretty neat. Clearly you would be exposed to many different cultures. Working for the tourism industry in the national parks here would be that type of experience, like summer jobs. Travel while your young!
I hope you have a good visit at the national park! Take some pictures, make a post!
