Hello hello, back with more Limestone carvings from our local Igloolik carver, Esa Kripanik. My previous post was about the soapstone Polar Bear carving that he did. This piece is a carving of an Inukshuk, a traditional Inuit stone marker, made out of flat tundra stones. They are used as landmarks and signs that tell hunters and travelers information of note. "Go this way to get home," "Cast your fishing nets here for good food," "Caribou travel through this area." Things like that.
As you can see, this is a relief carving, much like his other work. But this one contains a plethora of Arctic animals! On one side we are faced with Harp and Ring Seal, Narwhal, Beluga and Walrus. On the rear, Arctic Hare, Arctic fox, Caribou, Polar Bear, and Arctic Wolf. Basically every large mammal in our local area. (Granted, the last three animals are a LONG half-day-by-snowmobile journey away)
And to finish out this short post, a new photo of the Polar Bear carving. I was playing with my new camera, a Nikon D750. Expect a review on that shortly. I also need to do a review of my Shutterstock print order sometime. I promised that a few weeks ago...
