Looking back at my interests and activities before I really got hooked on Light Painting Photography. Most of my friends know that I'm deeply involved in Hip Hop culture, I have been since I was 14 years old and my gateway into this amazing dynamic culture was through Breakdance but when this new culture was 1st introduced to Europe it was as a package with Dance, Art & Music. Breakin', Graffiti & Rap/Hip Hop was my daily diet for quite a few years and I excelled as a Breaker and did ok as a Scratch DJ.
Vile Style 8 - v2
I was never very good at Graffiti and just used to go with my mates, who were much more skilled, just acting as a look-out or to help fill in large areas of colour. In 2009 a few of us "Old Skoolers" got together to plan an annual Breakin Jam, we wanted to put something on that was authentic and gritty and took from our knowledge of the culture to create Vile Style. We are currently planning our 14th Jam to be held at Pavilion Dance South West in Bournemouth, UK on 16th July 2022. We have been using the same logo since 1989 which was designed by Graffiti artist, B-boy, D.j. & Music Producer JUNK. On our 8th annual event in 2014 I made a large wooden, easel style, graffiti wall as a bit of a backdrop. After the Jam I set up the wall in my garden and traced around the piece with some home made LED tools.
Vile Style 8 - Final Version
After a few nights standing in the garden, it was time to dismantle the wall for another year (in fact it was used for multiple events over the following 6 years) but couldn't resist another few goes at trying to trace the graff lines in the dark with only the light you're painting with to light up the wall.
Vandal-Free Graffiti
Here are a few attempts at some Light Graffiti under a local by-pass done in 2014. We drew the outlines of our designs in chalk first and used colours that could be seen under the colour of light we were using. Learning very quickly that some of the jumbo chalk colours appeared invisible under certain colours of light. My knowledge was so basic that capping the lens wasn't even a consideration but would have helped so much!

WHAT IS LIGHTPAINTING?
Lightpainting is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure. Nothing is added or removed in post processing.
