Still trawling through some of my images from my early days of Light Painting, just trying to pick a few of my (better?) examples of all the different techniques I was trying at the time. There's so many techniques that you can learn in Light Painting Photography and as with many niche activities, you have to adapt and make do with what's available to you. Of course, I wanted to learn all the different techniques and ways of creating the images I was seeing on Flickr LP groups. So, with my trusty Sony A65v and a new 10-24 Tamron lens and a few finger lights from EBay it was time to try the spirograph pendulum.
I enjoyed the process of trying different types of string, cord and cable and seeing how I could get the lights to spin in an irregular pattern. It was difficult at the beginning as I had used a cotton string and just attached the string to the ceiling covering in a plastic roofed conservatory. I then tied a few knots in the end of the string and wrapped a couple of finger-lights together using the rubber bands that come with them, attaching them on the string at the same time. I quickly realized (a week later) after many failures, that the string needed to be attached to a rigid part of the ceiling and that it should be black with some sort of weight to help with the kinetic energy, so it would continue to swing without slowing down so quickly.
These were the first of a few images I ended up getting with the newly cobbled together pendulum and was happy with the results at the time. I'd probably want a little more of a sharp line and contrasting colours if I was to try it nowadays. I have only tried a few times since these shots but I inevitably moved on to the next technique or something that I was able add in outside locations, as that's what most of my home practices end up being used for.
I still have a bit of fishing wire in my kit just in case the opportunity to create a spirograph comes up!
