I dont know. Thats why I see myself as agnostic.
But.
If there is no transcendence, understood as a higher power and the foundation for our morality, the principles we follow in life, the possibility of separating good from evil, truth from lies
then a land authority, government or corporation enters that space.
They then write down the volumes of regulations that govern our lives. They determine what is best for us and how we should live.
The problem is that there is no real authority behind these laws, no unshakable foundation. Only other people, officials, as limited in their understanding as we are. Prone to stupidity and, worse, to corruption.

Dostoyevsky put it in shorter words and more accurately in The Brothers Karamazov.
"If there is no God, everything is permitted."
