English:
I recently finished playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate—a title considered by many to be the best "traditional" Monster Hunter game ever made. It represents the culmination and refinement of the series' classic formula before its transition to home consoles.
Unlike previous entries, which were anchored to a static village (such as Pokke or Yukumo from MHFU and MHP3rd, for example), MH4U opts for a mobile narrative centered on the "Caravan." As a novice Hunter, you join this Caravan—led by the Caravaneer, a charismatic and optimistic figure—on a quest to solve the mystery of a glowing relic. The Caravan’s diverse crew includes a Street Cook Felyne Chef; The Man, a hulking blacksmith and his apprentice, the "Little Miss Forge"; a monster-loving Guildmarm; and the Wycoon, a merchant.
Though simple, the plot is a breath of fresh air for the series; it ties the events of the story directly to your hunting missions, effectively bridging gameplay and narrative. Furthermore, the Caravan’s journey through locations like Val Habar, Harth, and Cathar allows for better character development—both for your immediate companions and for the broader cast of recurring characters, such as the Elite Hunter group.
In terms of gameplay, the most dramatic shift lies in the level design, which embraces multi-level environments and unprecedented verticality. Players can now scale walls and leap from ledges, enabling them to mount and topple monsters—a new tactical option to utilize during combat. Living up to the series' title, many monsters return to be hunted—such as Rathalos, Rathian, Tigrex, Deviljho, and Chameleos—while new creatures like Gore Magala and Seregios join the roster. These newcomers not only introduce fresh mechanics to the franchise—specifically the "Virus" (Frenzy) and "Bleeding" status effects—but also serve as the central catalysts for the conflicts that drive the game's narrative.
To facilitate monster hunting, two new weapons were introduced: the Charge Blade and the Insect Glaive. These are technical weapons that require complex learning and mastery; however, they created a gameplay imbalance, as they surpass other weapon types in both damage and versatility.
After 125 hours of gameplay, I’m left with a very positive experience. The characters are highly charismatic—especially the Guildmarm, with her eccentric remarks—and their witty comments are sure to bring a smile to your face as they accompany you throughout the story. Furthermore, the hunting missions feel fresher than ever, thanks to the new weapons and mechanics. The Charge Blade, in particular, proves to be an incredibly versatile and powerful weapon, making it easy to take down variants like the Chaotic Gore Magala or the Savage Deviljho
For fans of the Monster Hunter series, or for anyone looking to get into the franchise by starting with a title that predates Monster Hunter: World, MH4U is a game you simply cannot miss.
