World's First Bladder Transplant Gives New Hope For Cancer Patients

Surgeons in California performed the first successful human bladder transplant. The patient, a 41-year-old man, received a bladder and kidney from a deceased donor at UCLA on May 4, 2025. The operation lasted eight hours and was done by teams from UCLA and USC.

The new kidney began functioning immediately. The patient was able to urinate normally for the first time in seven years.

This approach may offer an alternative to current bladder reconstruction methods that use intestinal tissue. A clinical trial is planned to study the procedure further.
