The study “On the Phenomenon of Sudden Death in Animals and Man” by Curt P. Richter, studies how extreme stress or fear can sometimes cause sudden death. Richter called this “voodoo death” and looked at cases where people died from strong emotions even though they weren’t physically hurt. His work shows that the mind can have a powerful effect on the body .

Richter found that very strong emotions like terror, despair, or hopelessness can trigger dangerous changes in the body. For example, the heart and nervous system may react so strongly that it can lead to sudden death.

He also studied animals, especially rats, and saw that they could die suddenly when under extreme stress. This suggested that the connection between the mind and body is not just in humans, stress can be fatal in animals too.

Richter included examples from different cultures, like people dying after being cursed or experiencing severe emotional trauma. These cases show that sudden death from fear or stress can happen anywhere not just in one culture.

Overall, his research helped scientists understand how strong emotions can sometimes be deadly highlighting the close link between the mind and body.
