‘Stress crisis’ in UK as 5m struggle with financial, health and housing insecurity

More than 5 million working-age adults in the UK are simultaneously facing financial difficulties, health problems, and insecure housing, the highest level of combined stress since the 2008 financial crisis. Those affected are twice as likely to suffer from mental health issues, sleeplessness, and social isolation. Disabled people and ethnic minorities are disproportionately impacted. Even many employed people experience these insecurities.

The crisis creates a feeling of powerlessness and life being “on hold.” Experts call for urgent policy changes to reduce uncertainty through better public services, housing, and social support. The government highlights recent wage increases, NHS reforms, and housing commitments, but faces criticism for slow progress.
