A new study shows that human activities have been warming the Earth since the 1890s, much earlier than scientists thought before. Until now, most believed that the effects of pollution and greenhouse gases from factories and cars became clear only around the middle of the 1900s.
Using new computer models and old temperature records, researchers found that the burning of coal, oil, and gas during the early Industrial Revolution started changing the climate more than 130 years ago. This means that global warming is not just a recent problem but has been happening for a very long time.
This discovery is important because it shows how long humans have been affecting the planet. The pollution released in the past is still causing today’s rising temperatures and extreme weather.
The news comes at a critical time. In 2024, Earth experienced its hottest year ever recorded, with temperatures 1.6°C higher than before the Industrial Revolution. At the same time, coral reefs around the world are dying due to warmer oceans.
Knowing that human-caused warming began so long ago helps us understand the scale of the problem. It also reminds us why it’s urgent to reduce emissions and protect nature to keep our planet safe for the future.
