A healthcare centre in Hong Kong, Humansa Medical Centre, in collaboration with i-Cognitio Sciences and CUHK, has developed an AI system that predicts the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by analysing retinal images. This non-invasive method detects early changes in the eye's blood vessels and nerves, signs that may appear 10 to 15 years before clinical symptoms.

Validated with nearly 13,000 retinal images, the AI system achieves 80-92% accuracy across diverse populations. Compared to conventional cognitive tests and invasive scans, this offers a simple, low-cost, and accessible tool for early detection in community settings.

With dementia affecting 1 in 3 people over 85 in the Asia-Pacific and Alzheimer’s making up the majority of cases in Hong Kong, this innovation provides a promising way to enable early intervention and potentially prevent or delay up to 45% of dementia cases.
