Intro
I'm not calling THE bottom, but we are definitely at a low point for Gods Unchained. Bugs appear to be cropping up faster than they can be fixed. The game is unbalanced and morale is low. Streamers taking the week off. etc.
I took this as a sign.
Card prices are really low. They can absolutely fall further, but you're talking about losing $.15 or something with a 50% drop. I'm not buying 100x copies - just 2 to play with - so now is a great time to flesh out my MJ playset. I'll review what I bought and why.
Also, I'm buying everything with GODS, which are also tanking and arguably rise and fall with the success of the game just like cards. In a sense, I'm just converting resources more than putting more money in.
My hope is that this gives others a guide on what they might want to pick up.
Legendaries
The most expensive cards I purchased. Galatea could be a really solid card if they tweak the new "other domain" deception variant to be strong. They over-nerfed it, but I want to have this guy in my collection before they re-buff it.
Madame just seems like an interesting card. It's neutral, which means that changes to any God could make her relevant. She spits out targets for Out of It's Misery and she triggers 'on summon' effects for various cards. At the end of the day, $4 isn't a bad price for a legendary. If it falls to $2 we haven't lost the farm.
A tiny bit of speculating on Remnis here. It's a terrible card, and the price reflects that. Currently the cheapest legendary in MJ. It could absolutely stay terrible. The lowest D.O. legendaries are sitting around $2 right now, so the downside is low. On the other hand, I'm hoping they rework it. Even a small change like giving it Blitz could make a big difference.
Epics
So that's the extent of our "big spending". Epics below are incredibly cheap. Particularly epics.
Death
None. Getting nerfed.
Deception
If "Other Domain" deception is going to pop off, Twenty-Sided Mace will absolutely be a staple. Currently incredibly cheap. I also picked up Unlikely Pact to make sure I had the relevant cards for that archetype (ditto leggies/rares).
Heroic Brawler is mainly a card I want to try out and it's dirt cheap. I like my current strength-steal deck, but you wind up with tons of 1-HP creatures on the board. You get to choose when to play it, so you should able to get 6/6 worth of stats on the drop. Then it has potential upside. Your strength steal creatures can make sure that enemy creatures have lower than 5 strength.
Light
I already had 1 Eucos, so I'm just filling out the playset. A discord announcement also made it clear that they will be 'fixing' it to apply soulless before the -1/-1. This will make it much more effective against anubians.
Agressive Superior is dirt cheap. A lot of that is due to how fast the meta is right now. If it slows down, he can shine. Madame Denholm anyone?
Magic
Pyre is kind of crap, but I already had 1 and for $.14 I figured I'd pick up another. No big story here.
Immaterialize is just one of those cards you need to have. It has an extremely unique effect that will only get stronger as more cards are released that potentially combo. Even now, I want to see how it works with Demetrios. Any card where the primary benefit is their roar or afterlife is a solid combo opportunity.
Nature
Picking U.R. gave me 2x. Card draw for aggro decks is good. 3 mana for two creatures is solid and the flexibility to buff board if you have it is nice.
Forrestheart Dryads are legit amazing cards. You can't tell at the moment given the currently broken meta, but they will probably get nerfed.
War
None. All super-specialized for empower. War can't foresee and doesn't have card draw. Stop trying to make relic OTK happen.
Neutral
It's a solid card. War, Nature, and Light all have ways to combo with it and heal it back up.
Rares
Death
None. Getting nerfed.
Deception
Support for "Other Domain" and "Strength Steal" deception archetypes. Cards are dirt cheap. I reconsidered Armory Heist. In a strength steal deck, I don't want to kill their creatures with something like Rapture Dance. I want to clog their board with 0/X creatures while buffing mine.
Contract Broker is 4/2 stats for 1 mana and 1/1 of those stats immediately attacks. Can clear out enemy shadow cats, demetrios, etc. Not 100% sold on the card, but worth $.18.
Light
Line in the Sand is probably the best 5 mana stall card in the game, and you can pick it up for the low low price of $.16.
Magic
Flexibility is great for control magic decks, and Empower provides that. Crackling Bolt in particular is really solid. I'm assuming that "Deal 8 damage instead" is also limited to creatures, but it's still a flexible removal tool. (Does anyone know for sure? Can it go face?)
Hawkish is terrible. Picked up a week ago. Hoping for a buff.
Nature
Their neat cards. Loam is probably over-priced, but I'm not losing sleep over 30 cents so I grabbed it.
War
None.
Neutral
None.
Commons
Not much to say here. They are literally pennies, so I picked up some cheap ones I didn't have. I've been picking up 2x of pretty much every card that hits $.02. I've not been playing many matches in weekend ranked, so this is an easy way to fill out the collection. With months of balance patches incoming, it's nice to go ahead and have them.
Conclusion
I didn't buy any shiny copies. It doesn't sound like they will be any utility this year, so no rush. In total, it looks like I converted about 40 GODS ($27 worth) into cards. The bulk of that was the 4 legendary cards. Each week, I make sure to play at least 1 game in mythic, which is ~5 GODS or something.
I hope this is helpful. Maybe it brought your attention to some solid deals on cards you weren't aware of.
