Hey all!

I came across a few coronet control magic decks that looked fun to play (and also that beat me 馃ぃ) so I decided to try it out. I'm not big into long control games, but this is fun enough to play every once in a while. If you like control, then I definitely recommend it. It has lots of anti-aggro tools while being able to go the distance against other control decks.

I'm particularly proud of the game I recorded for this post. It makes me appear to be a better player than I actually am. 馃槅

The Deck

Coronet is $60 and Hortuk is $120, so the deck isn't cheap. Obviously Coronet is required, but you can sub in early removal (e.g. Starshard Bolt) for hortuk. The deck already has a lot at 7 mana.

Win Con vs Control

This deck can generate a max of 7 coronets. That's 7 opportunities to delve devastating 9 drops. Delving is still random, but with 7 tries at it, you're bound to get an Avatar of Magic, Polyhymnia, or something else enormous.

This will let you out-value many control decks - even the expensive ones with Thaeriel or the endless wisp of Control Nature. Control Light is probably the only deck that can out-value you with it's near-endless bringing back from the void.

Also note the Warp Engineer. You can use that to lower the cost of your Coronet to 3. This lets you play Coronet + Wrangler at 7 mana and then get a 9 drop the very next turn. This can surprise control decks with something they can't answer.

Win Con vs Aggro

Frontliners, board wipes, and healing for days. This deck doesn't use ramp, but instead relies big-statted creatures to whether the storm. Ramp isn't in this deck because it tops out at 7 mana. You don't need to reach 9 mana like the Frey/AoM decks, so the ramp isn't as effective.

Remove everything your opponent plays and hope to stabilize the game and run them out of cards before they kill you.

Gameplay

This game is quite the nail-biter. Olympian War is really strong against control magic. It buffs cards in hand before magic gets a change to manage them. They can quickly get out of range of magic's damaged-based removal options.

Mulligan

Just looking for as much low-mana removal as possible. Talisman is excellent, and the card draw from Frenetic is really nice. Olympian War starts slow (wants to build a large hand), which means we probably have time to play Frenetic on an empty board with a pip.

Nothing interesting happens until 4 mana (3 mins in).

4 Mana

As expected, the early turns were slow. At 4 mana he finally plays a card worth paying attention to. We draw Coronet, which is pretty worthless against aggro (including olympians usually). We need cards to help us survive, and Coronet doesn't. We also have a lot of our top end in hand, which isn't great.

I use what I've got and get the Talisman equipped. It's effect is more than just the damage. It throws off aggro's gameplan of dumping hand and going fast.

5 Mana

Coronet is a waste, but I have nothing else better to do. I get it out of my hand and maybe we see it again before the game is over. Probably not.

Skipping to 6 Mana

Well he finally goes off. He has a lot of cards in hand and plays the Village Vender combo. He even follows it up with OOIM to get ward. Game time.

I'm in a huge jam. I don't have a clean way to deal with this board. I could have pinged ward off Vendor and then pipped into shaped blast. Instead, I throw out the wall. Importantly, I make sure to take out the last 1/1 so that he can't ward the next card he plays.

6.5 Mana

Our opponent makes a critical mistake here. In his rush to kill me, he wipes the board with Soul Survivor and goes face. This kills his village vendor. On the other hand, the play is reasonable from his perspective. He can kill me in two turns.

I have some options here. An obvious one is to play Hortuk. However, I have two board wipes in hand that I'd like to use, and I'd prefer they not kill my own creatures! Olympians don't run much (or any) god blitz, so I go with Safeguard here. I get to draw a card, prevent damage, and then wipe whatever he plays next turn.

7 Mana

Martyr is scary. Not only is she big. But when she dies, the next big thing killed comes back!

Oni is the obvious answer here. I play the 1/1 frontline in a feeble attempt to protect my face and/or oni.

7.1 Mana

Of course the blitzer removes the 1/1. Commander Pyros is the bigger problem. It throws a huge wrench in my gameplan, which was to transform the Martyr.

It takes me a bit, but I find a nice line, though! Pyros' effect doesn't happen until after a spell is fully resolved, so the double hit from Flames will wipe his board and allow me to face with Oni healing 5 precious hit points.

7.2

Well hello coronet! Too bad we're still fighting for our lives and can't risk playing you.

Instead, I transform the Fur Guard. This prevents it from triggering Martyr and I can hopefully keep transforming whatever he plays.

8 Mana

So much for that thought! A huge blitzer! However, here is where I win the game with a heads up play. Instead of killing Reios, I keep my wits and kill the 0/1. This puts a worthless card in his hand! Not only that, but the Form of Power from sanctum lets me completely clear the board.

It's so clean! It's so pro! ...I didn't see FoP in the sanctum when I started playing it out though. Happy accident! 馃槃

8.1 Mana

We can actually play the Coronet! Who'da thought? Avatar of Magic can win the game on the spot next turn.

Remember that our opponent used An End to War on our Hortuk. You usually don't see that card in Olympian War, but if he had held it, he could have killed AoM and I'd have never seen it coming.

8.2 Mana

He can't answer and concedes. GG!

Conclusion

The deck is fun. There are no 8 or 9 drops, so you don't completely brick as often vs aggro. It does run 6 7 drops though, which is 20% of the deck. As you saw in this game, you can get your hand clogged. However, the removal you have is very effective.

It's a solid list. Unfortunately, some expensive cards like Coronet are required.
