I'm as surprised as anyone. I haven't even been in Mythic consistently for the past few months. I just play random/fun budget decks and focus on getting 2-3 wins per day for GODS. However, right before weekend ranked started I popped into mythic, so I decided to modify my strategy a bit and see if I could still get 10 wins.
The strategy was simple. While I enjoy playing a variety of decks in gold/diamond, playing budget control in Mythic is how you do two things:
So I decided to bounce around between a few aggro decks.
I'm actually going to write up a full deck review of the aggro light deck, but it's basically the board-buff deck:
Code:
GU_1_3_CDFCDFKABKABCDOCDOICCICCCBNCBNKALKALHAFHAFKDQKDQCFfCFfCFYBAqBAqBGKBGKKDfICkICkKAYICjICjCBM
What's nice about this deck is that it's strong against the control-heavy Mythic meta. Lots of ward and protected. Blades are more of a problem in Mythic, but if you have 6 2/6 creatures on board, blading one for 5 mana doesn't actually accomplish much.
I've optimized the Aggro War deck heavily over the past month, and it feels really nice to play:
Code:
GU_1_6_BDyKBjKBjCBaCBaHAFHAFCDqCDqIDjIDjCBBCBBOAGOAGCAZCAZKBgKBgIDkKBhKBhCEcCEcIDmBDJBDJKBiKBiCCL
This deck is much faster than the light deck, and the idea is to win quickly against control opponents before they can start dropping those cards they spent so much money on. The other nice thing about this deck is it beats aggro light most of the time.
And this is why I don't enjoy playing in Mythic:
When a new player gets to Mythic with a budget deck, they are pumped the first time they beat a $2k deck. Even if they lost 5 games to them first, that first win feels great. The longer you play, though, the more it wears on you. Yes, you can win (if you play perfect and draw the right cards), but every game is an uphill battle, and you realize that your wins aren't really so much about you as about chance. No deck wins 100% of the time - not even $2k decks. Sometimes you get to be the one that beats them, but not usually.
Here's Nackarub's deck for example:
You'll win ~1/5 times you play this deck mainly due to random chance. In fact, with a budget deck it's probably much less. It's just tiring. If you look at my recent matches, you'll see a fought this exact deck and beat it. I just happened to switch over to aggro light, and I curved out hitting like 3 board buffs in a row including Asterius. It was still a close game! That's nuts.
I also ran into 2-3 schoolteacher decks. This led me to stick with Aggro War. The light deck just isn't fast enough. Playing against schoolteachers is stressful, but if I had the cards, I'd probably play it too. It's a solid deck to punish this control-heavy meta.
So what do I win for slogging through WR at Mythic?
I went 10/17 (no I didn't even bother to play the last game) and get a leggy pack.
Here's the current state of the Mortal Judgement legendary cards.
The expected value of this pack is terrible, and I will be going back to not caring about weekend ranked. This is the result of the GU team turmoil. All the issues over the past year meant that they just kept giving MJ packs as rewards. Combined with a shrinking player base and weak leggies, we arrive at this sad state of affairs. For the next set, here's hoping they put some kind of ultimate cap on it and print some leggies that are worth the title.
That's it for me and my weekend report. I'm going to go back to playing whatever I feel like and conceding to $2k decks quickly unless I just draw the nuts. Playing lots of different decks is how I enjoy the game, and enjoyment is worth a lot more than a $0.30 leggy card.
