welcome to the arena mode... it have pros and cons.
I have been on both sides of what you wrote and it sucks. I highly doubt anyone would do this on purpose to screw tournaments.
Blunders are part of the chess, especially blitz. And I actually prefer when someone resigns after blunder with no realistic way to have a chance. Super seriousness in arena is dangerous thing, in our game when I blundered simple tactics the "correct" way for maximum chance to win tournament would be to not resign and delay the game so you can't catch up in points. It would also be idiotic thing to do. Chess & fun >> results at all costs.
Arena mode brings bit of lottery with it - price for having new games quickly after you finish.
