Carobs, the flat bean pods from the carob tree, have been consumed by people from the Mediterranean and the Middle East for centuries. In recent times, it can be increasingly found in health food shops. Whether as powder, pod or syrup, carob has become a coveted food due to its outstanding nutrient content.
Registered dietitian Winsy Leung points out that carob is rich in calcium, potassium, fibre, minerals, such as magnesium, iron and manganese and others, and vitamins like A and D. She says that research has linked carob consumption with reduced heart problems. Carob is a great source of natural soluble fibre.
Carob has a sweet taste which is distinctive in flavour. Good tasting carob depends upon the particular variety of the tree. Just like there are low-quality kitchen apples, there are also good quality apple varieties.
