Hello there, my coffee loving friends. For this week, I'll tell about some of my stories and hopefully, give my insight about this game since I consider myself still new to this game.
Splinterlands is a card-based auto battler game. It is a game of skill and prediction. If you can predict your opponent's moves, you will have a higher chance of winning your battles but just like in real life, luck is also a big factor. If you're lucky enough, you may win game even if you don't have the best team.
You build a team from your own pool of card using one summoner and up to six units. The element of your summoner dictates what elements of units you can use for a certain battle. There are six main elements namely, Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Death and Dragon. For the Dragon element, you can choose one of the other five elements to use.
The benefit of using Dragon element is besides the element you chose, you can also use Dragon cards. Other than these, you also have another pool of cards called Neutrals. You can use neutral cards regardless of the elements you chose.
For each battle, you also have to abide on a set of rules during the battle. These are composed of three rules:
To summarize, you make a team with a summoner and up to 6 units while following a set of rules every battle and watch to see if your team conquers your enemies.
Since you are new, there might be some who would disagree but I think starting in Wild Ranked Format is a good thin for beginners.
Splinterlands is divided into Modern Ranked Format and Wild Ranked Format.
In Modern, you have limited pool of cards and you can only use cards from both Chaos Legion and Untamed. While this looked like a good start, this format also bans the use of bots. Everyone you will fight in Modern Ranked Format are humans and might be really really good at the game despite being in Bronze.
In Wild, it's the opposite. There are a lot of bots and they aren't that good. This may help boost your confidence and like the game more as you learn since... Well, who doesn't like winning, right?
The disadvantage (or advantage, depending on your perspective) of Wild Ranked Format is the amount of cards you can use. In this format, you can use any cards from Alpha to Rebellion as long as you have it or rent it. This might be confusing at first but it also gives you a lot to play with and get comfortable.
What I suggest is to play Wild Ranked Format while using only Chaos Legion and Rebellion cards so you wouldn't get culture shocked when you transfer to Modern Ranked Format. This way, you can practice with easier enemies while getting familiar with the cards from both of those sets.
I'm an introvert myself so I may not be convincing when I tell you to join discord or communities when I haven't joined one myself. What I can say and share is even if you're an introvert like me, you can engage with others by leaving an upvote on their blogs after you read them.
I can't tell you enough how I got ideas from simply browsing contest blogs in the Splinterlands Battle Mage Secrets and Social Media Contests. I leave a message if I'm in a good mood but most of the time, I am only a silent reader and just leave an upvote after me reading.
If you are more courageous though, I heard Splinterlands have a Twitch channel. I don't know if it still exists but there's a lot of Splinterlands gamers in youtube as well, you can check them out and leave comments below and they'll reply.
I had a lot of problems when I started. I had no idea of what to do and why some of my monsters does not attack. There were no instructions and the only way to learn is through researching other blogs, watching youtube for tips and trial and error... a lot of trial and errors.
In addition to that, they attack regardless of where they were placed so you don't need to think a lot about proper positioning. This eliminates a few things you need to be concerned about so you can use that brain power on other things like understanding the abilities and rule sets.
When I started, Untamed units and summoners can be used in Modern Ranked Format. The moment I got hooked with mages is with Kron the Undying and Scarred Llama Mage. Those two can kill anything and everything and is very strong. Kron has Heal to heal himself while Scarred Llama Mage can increase his attacks and defenses with Last Stand. Scarred Llama Mage also has Cleanse so Kron the Undying can avoid any negative status and keep healing himself while dealing damage. Right now, this combo is not usable in Modern Ranked Format since Untamed are now not allowed. If you are interested, you can try it in Wild Ranked Format along with he other older cards.
Kron the Undying and Scarred Llama Mage is my second favorite combo. The first is with a Beta unit called, "The Kraken." I can go on and on to why this is the best card even until now but to make this blog shorter, you can read all about it in my other posts:
