It was 1983, and Genia was 11. Genia's dad had simply passed on. In 1983 , in the event that somebody had an upstruction of the entrails , they would need to sit tight until morning for medical procedure. Genia's dad didn't make it until morning , and passed on at 39 years old. Having originated from Poland only 10 years prior, Josef had worked for his family since that was his obligation. Josef's significant other, a dowager at age 35, and his youngsters, Genia 13, Helena 8 (my mother), James 7, Stashu 5 and Casmier, 15, who was in a wheelchair for a long time in the wake of being hit by an auto, all needed to "go on". The obligation was then in the hands of Josefina ,the 35-year-old dowager, and in addition in the hands of Genia, the multi year old young lady. In 1983, there was no welfare. What was the family to do? Genia, compelled to learn obligation , went to work cleaning houses to encourage the family. Tending the garden and canning the food, tending the cow and offering the drain, Genia learned duty. This "educated "duty was carried on when her sibling, Casmier passed on in 1981 and her mom, Josefina kicked the bucket in 1982.Genia took her siblings and sister, Helena(my mother) and raised them .From that Christmas Eve in 1982,Genia never surrendered the obligation ,until the point that every one of the youngsters were raised to adulthood and even after that until the day Ciocia Genia kicked the bucket at 59 years old. Supplicating the rosary and going to Mass everday for her family was her "learned " responsibility. This "learned" duty that Ciocia Genia , my Auntie Genia, needed to learn in 1983 and later in 1982, and until the point that the day she passed on to heaven, made be "esteem" family obligation! I might want to feel that Ciocia Genia, my "saint" and my "holy messenger" is viewing over the family and saying "family first" , that is your duty and you better learn it and convey it on!
