There are quite a few old buildings in the nearest town. The oldest church was established in 1778. The building is still standing, and people still gather there to pray. Some of the hotels, student residences, and accommodations are also very old. Maintaining old buildings is not easy, I imagine. However, it’s a wonderful tradition, and it’s great to preserve such historic structures.
Some of the buildings have been renovated and repurposed for different uses. One of my favourite buildings in town is the old fire station, which is now used for an optometry clinic. The exterior looks narrower compared to old photos of the fire station, but the building’s framework remains the same.
Every time I go there, I look up at the ceiling. I love this view while waiting for my turn to get my glasses checked. The shape of the windows is different from the original fire station design, but these windows are also quite old and beautiful. The staff told me that the original fire station was established around the 1800s.
I think it's a good idea to keep the ceiling exposed like this. I come here in winter as well, and even though there’s no insulation under the roof, it’s not very cold. The space feels very open and airy when I walk into the building.
Of course, they must have used new wood to redo the ceiling during the renovation, but I still feel the charm of the old building. I love experiencing the sense of history through current buildings like this. This place could easily serve as a cool art gallery too.

近くの町にはかなり古い建物がいくつかあります。町でいちばん古い教会は１７７８年に建設されたそうです。その教会はいまだにしっかりと存在していて、人々が集まったりお祈りをするために使っています。ホテル、学生住宅や宿泊施設の建物などは古いものが多いです。古い建物を維持するのは容易なことではないと思いますが、歴史的な建物を保持するのはとてもいい文化だと思います。
そういった古い建物はリノベーションされてよく別の用途で使用されていることが多いです。町の古い建物の中で好きなのは昔の消防署を使用している眼鏡屋さんです。当時の消防署の写真と比べると、現在の建物は幅が狭いように思いますが、建物の枠組みは同じです。
ここを訪れると、いつも天井を見上げてしまいます。自分の順番を待っているとき、上をながら待ちます。消防署の窓と現在の窓の形が違うよですが、現在の美しい窓もわりと古いようです。スタッフの方が教えてくださったのですが、消防署は１８００年代に建てられたものらしいです。
天井を抜いてこのようなデザインにするのはとても良いアイディアだと思います。冬にこの建物を訪れることがありますが、屋根の下に断熱材が入っていなくともそこまで寒さを感じません。この建物の中に一歩足を踏み入れると、開放的な空間を感じます。
もちろん、天井は新しい木材に変えたりリノベーションを終えていると思いますが、いまだにいい具合の古さが伝わってくる建物です。私は現在の建物を通じて古の雰囲気を感じるのが好きです。ここはアートギャラリーにしても良さそうですね。
