the elite have disposed of their emotions/feelings to become what they are

in so doing, they have in effect become lizards, lacking feelings

i think this is why the theory feels to make sense. are they really lizards? i won't say no

there is plenty of room underground for these folks to have existed and retreat to after they mess the surface world up. and that too is why I think the theory has survived.
