Space Academy commission opens

On September 9, Administrator Isaacman and Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson hosted the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy at NASA Headquarters.

Joined by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink, and leaders from the White House, OMB, OSTP, and across the Administration, the group launched planning for a new federal academy.

Chaired by Isaacman per President Trump's August executive order, the commission has until late December to recommend governance, curriculum blending technical training with leadership and public service, location, and legislative needs. The goal: develop talent for NASA, Space Force, and the broader space enterprise to secure American leadership.

Iowa: Moon Base and the Artemis generation

The day before, on September 8, Isaacman visited Ames National Laboratory and Iowa State University with Rep. Zach Nunn, DOE Deputy Secretary James Danly, NRC Chairman, and other federal partners.

The tour showcased materials science and engineering work critical to lunar challenges. Then came a packed student town hall where Isaacman laid out the Moon Base vision in three phases and urged the Artemis generation to step up.

Students are already active: CyLaunch rockets, Cardinal Space Mining for lunar resources, recent CubeSats in orbit. Isaacman brought Apollo moon rocks and a lunar vehicle, telling them their generation will build and operate the base, not just read about it.

"The second space race is coming down to months, not years," he posted. With policy and congressional resources providing an edge, he called for urgency on Moon return and nuclear power/propulsion to avoid ceding ground.

He also spotlighted the emeritus program, thanking astronauts Reid and Victor for Artemis II contributions and their continued mentorship of crews, controllers, and engineers for Artemis III and beyond.

These statements reflect a leadership style that pairs bold goals with institutional memory and realistic assessment of competition. Nuclear propulsion and surface power remain central enablers for sustained presence.
