On this day in 1959, a small Soviet probe turned its cameras toward a landscape no human eye had ever seen. For forty quiet minutes, Luna 3 recorded the far side of the Moon, developing the film aboard and later sending the grainy frames home.
Those first images showed a world unlike the familiar near side, cratered and almost free of dark maria. In a single pass, the unknown hemisphere became part of our shared map, and the Moon grew a little less mysterious.
