Emotions, thoughts, passions, dreams, beliefs, inspirations, people, and even life are sometimes best described in lines of lyrics and rhythm. Sometimes it’s the only way to be heard or listened to. Even when no one’s listening, voicing out how you feel to the air, or walls, performing in front of inanimate objects and even singing in the shower somehow give us relief, and somehow alleviates of thoughts that have been waiting to burst out of us. You don’t have to know how to sing like a professional or know how to use musical scores or even play an instrument to be moved by music or pen down a few lyrics. Music defines us, eases us, soothes us, makes us happy, lightens our mood, makes us feel strong inspires us and so much more.

The most amazing part of music is, it’s an art that’s part of our culture and religion. The different kinds of music; afro, pop, jazz, reggae, rhythm and blues, blues, rock and roll, beat, afro-pop, afro-beat, country, electric, gospel, dancehall, hip-hop, rap, funk, rock, soul, cultural and so on. I mean, there’s music for every kind of celebration, mood, event, emotion and so on.
Growing up, being introduced into the Disney world, one thing has always and will always catch my attention, music. Singing is the one thing I can do in sickness, health, pain, anger, frustration, happiness and boredom. I’d stand looking at the television, wishing to be the one on stage performing that song, knowing what it’s like to be heard. I’d download a song and practice it till I am able to sing word for word and even pitch songs with high notes. At 18, I have gone pretty far with training my voice, depending on the musician I’m listening to. I listen to a lot of Beyonce, Rihanna, Adele, Meghan Trainor, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Nichole Scherzinger, Kesha Cole, Jessy Jay and I rap Nicki Minaj and Cardi-B. Locally, I listen to a lot of Simi, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade and Asha. I listen to a lot of black American worship songs, I for one believe they have the most difficult voice pitches and I like to push myself.
I’m currently in the choir and doing lead solos and even leading praise and worship sessions. I can at least use my talent and love for singing in the church.
I love to sing because it’s one of the only ways I can express myself and not because I can even sing or have the voice. I write lyrics of my own that I one day hope to perform and be appreciated for. I love to sing because it eases me. It defines me. It’s the one talent I have, that has my back. It’s the one thing that distinguishes me from others. I love to sing because I love music. I like to move and groove to music. I like to play with music. I love to sing because I’m usually alone and it keeps me company, yes! I love to sing because music is one thing people subconsciously listen to, even when they don’t want to, so yeah you can get some attention, or all attention.
Singing gives me joy, it’s my voice that can never be cut off. It’s my passion, my ride or die. I can lose everything I have today, but singing, music, gives me hope. Sometimes there’s no power and it becomes really boring and too quiet. So I let my voice out and entertain everyone who wants to be. Just like the birds that sing. They have wings, I don’t. singing gives me wings to fly and I promise you anytime I close my eyes to sing, I’m locked up in a peaceful colourful world of my own with no troubles, no worries, no grief and no competition.
