Liberia was founded, colonised, established and controlled by citizens of the USA as well as ex Carribbean slaves as a colony for former African American slaves and their free black descendants.

The settlement of the slaves in Liberia was handled by the ACS, the American Colonisation Society. The new immigrants passed through untold hardships as the mortality rates that they had at the time is the highest ever recorded in human history. More than half of the immigrants died between 1820 - 1843.
