I'm starting a weekly series to catch up the general population on the lingo one might use in their fandom. I know when I'm talking to some of my friends, it sometimes feels like I'm speaking a different language, and they have no idea what I'm talking about. So I've decided to pick one word or acronym commonly used and will explain what it is and give some examples!
The first word is...
Fandom!
Fandom: Group of people that love the same book/tv show/movie and want to share their love with others. This consists of artists, cosplayers, and fan-fiction writers that utilize their talents to convey their feelings about the fandom. Communication usually occurs via websites, such as Tumblr, and can lead to interesting discussions. Often, members of a fandom designate a name to call themselves.
Examples of Fandom Names
1. Doctor Who - Whovians
Fans of the Sci-Fi show Doctor Who are often referred to as Whovians.
2. Harry Potter - Potterheads
Fans of the Harry Potter series are considered to be Potterheads.
The great thing about fandoms is that you don't have to belong to just one!
Example: Superwholock
If you are a member of the Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock fandoms, you are considered to be in the Superwholock super fandom!
Fandoms can also help you get through trying times in your series, or during times of content drought.
Example: The Sherlock Fandom
This series has had quite a long wait between each season, sending Sherlockians into some crazy hard times, but at least we can make it through!
It's even worse when you're perfectly OK with waiting an entire year to see what happens
Example: Attack on Titan
When you have to wait years between the first and second season, you praise the gods you only have to wait one more year for more episodes.
