Some years ago, while I was still living in the villa, one of our church members lost his 10-year-old son in an accident. When we got there to pay him a condolence visit, my boss (our pastor) kicked off his speech and prayers with thanksgiving to God, practically appreciating God for the lives of the remaining children, the lives of the parents, and many more. I already knew that our church abides by the principle of thanking God always, no matter the situation, but at that moment, I felt he shouldn't have started with something like that because, come on, the family was mourning heavily. But it was what it was.
When I grew older in faith (sorry, I'm being religious), I came to realize that, truly, no matter what happens, we ought to give God thanks. Yes, great temptations might arise, and it might look as though God is asleep, but we still need to acknowledge Him because He sees everything. He knows why such things happen or why those temptations occur, and He also knows what is going to happen next.
In my own life, I've been living by this principle. Although it gets hard sometimes, I usually return, reflect, and find a balance by being grateful for everything.
I can't mention them because the list is endless, and there is no "small" blessing among them.
Even as I sit down to type this, I have a big obstacle rolling my way, and it will hit me tomorrow. I know it's going to be troublesome, but I already know that, whatever the case may be, I'm going to come out relieved. At this moment, it may seem like the biggest issue I need to overcome so I can be grateful for solving the biggest problem in my life, but hell no. There are other things that may appear very little, yet they're just as valuable and can also be regarded as the biggest blessings. In the end, all of them are significant and worth being grateful for.
If you ask someone to mention the basic things they're grateful for, they would probably start by saying they're grateful to be alive, considering it the greatest blessing. Meanwhile, a lot of people may treat that as something ordinary and instead focus on what they consider bigger blessings. The truth is that all the things we've enjoyed and are still enjoying, including the life challenges we're going to face and overcome in the future, are worth being grateful for.
